While speculation about what would have happened we will never know. Sometimes the most likely thing never happens. Had Watergate not happened it is still possible that events would happened by 1976 to bring Jimmy Carter in and history would have went on as we know it. I find it no more surprising that the Republicans retook the presidency in 1980 than the fact Nixon took it 1968 after announcing he was retiring from politics in 1962.
It is just as easy to blame LBJ for Nixon’s success making LBJ the main factor is what happen the rest of the century.
I recently introduced Mallon at a book event at the National Press Club. It is an interesting book but remember that it is fiction. Mallon said that it was the first book he has written that he wished he less information on the subject.
